Custom cabinetry and all new Finishes

Designed by Award winning Lauren Haskell Designs, this kitchen got modernized using marble, quartz, white oak, and brass. We made a custom island to the clients specifications including hidden drawers and places for cutlery. Variations in paint color and wood finishes offers depth and layers, creating a sleek modern look that has character and ambiance.

1939 House Remodel

1939 UPDATE IN BOULEVARD OAKS

Banks St. was a complete design and remodel. Built in 1939, we kept the traditional feel of the house but also updated the footprint to better suit contemporary living. We opened up the kitchen and dining by removing part of a wall, making it less formal and making the space flexible to be used as dining or living. We also removed an island in the kitchen that was oversized for the space and instead extended the counters the full length of the kitchen, inserting a washer and dryer at the end near the backdoor and the pool, using the subfloor to maintain the counter height. The upper cabinets were removed and instead we created a floor to ceiling built in cabinet at the far side. All the cabinets are custom millwork made of walnut. 

Upstairs we added a master bath and walk-in closet, installed walk-in closets with built in furniture and pocket doors in the other bedrooms, and updated the existing baths with new tile and fixtures. The entire house was rewired and recessed lights were installed. A new color palette was chosen of mostly whites, grays and tans, except for the downstairs powder room which was painted a dark aubergine. The facade was simplified by removing decorative shutters and painted a different shade of grayish brown and black, keeping the palette sophisticated yet understated. The eves were painted a subtle pale blue in keeping with the vernacular of southern porches. At the end of the photo gallery you can see the before photos. 

Kitchen Update in Morningside Place

What to do when your house is made of shiplap: white wash it, add some subway tile, soapstone, white shaker cabinets and voilå, you have a retrofitted new kitchen. Add a copper Chambers stove and then you have every last element of your grandma's kitchen but with updates and style. For this kitchen, everything was gutted. We installed new flooring, new old shiplap, subway tile and soapstone. Not enough room for a pantry so we built a custom cabinet floor to ceiling and painted it Yves Klein Blue. 

1980’s Townhome in Montrose

Turning a 1970's townhome into an URBAN loft 

This town home had a pantry and double oven in the middle of the kitchen, dividing the space into little pockets. Our client wanted to open up the space like a loft. We moved HVAC, electrical and installed two beams, opening the space up.

We also updated the kitchen cabinets using semi-custom cabinets and added Quartz counters, new appliances, new flooring, new backsplash, new lighting and a perfect sheetrock job with new paint.

Bellaire Flood Remodel

Adding architectural elements

Having to remedy flood damage, our clients took the opportunity to do a complete remodel. We replaced all the flooring, took out all the dated textured sheetrock on the walls and ceilings, and reconfigured a staircase which opened up the living and entry space. We added custom steel stair rails to add to the contemporary update and installed a wall of stone around the fireplace, creating an architectural focal point. We fabricated a custom mantel made of rough hewn salvaged oak. In the kitchen we replaced the counters with an Aphrodite granite and put in a copper backsplash, and a copper bar. Then we painted the whole house. For this family, a natural disaster turned into a brand new home with elements that underscored their unique lifestyle and tastes. Hunnicutt Construction loves working with clients who want to take aesthetic risks and puts their trust in our hands to make it happen. This was a happy collaboration and we are very proud of the results. 

Kipling St. Bathroom Remodel

A custom shower and new master bath

Another Montrose bungalow with a funky master bath that needed updating and attention. Our clients wanted to make reconfigure the bathroom with a custom shower and personal tile selections. We helped them source material and make selections including all fixtures, lighting and surface material.

To get started we demoed the space and moved or added some plumbing. We got rid of the tub, built a shower pan, moved the toilet, built a custom cabinet for storage and covered it in quartz, added a shower bench made of quartz and installed a new vanity with a custom quartz top and undermount sink. All the fixtures are made by Kohler. We tiled the floor with Morrocan cement tiles and the wall tile is a ceramic arabesque tile.

Sometimes the beauty of small spaces is the affordability of nice materials.

Broadmead Kitchen Update

Mold remediation turns into Quartzite Counter Tops and more storage

A small leak turned into a big problem turned into an improvement opportunity. Our client didn’t want to redo the entire kitchen but took the opportunity to update and modify what they had. First we had the kitchen tested for mold and then brought in our remediators to clean out the mold and sanitize the space per the protocol. Once we passed inspection, we removed the remaining cabinets on the sink side of the kitchen which allowed us to demo the bar and make a counter height surface. We used semi-custom cabinets to stay in line with the budget and were still able to design new storage on the back side of the island while rearranging storage on the sink side of the island where we added a trash drawer and drawer microwave. All the countertops were upgraded to Taj Mahal Quartzite. And we were able to match the Travertine marble on the floor allowing for seamless repairs.

1929 Montrose Bungalow

A closet becomes a bathroom

The client wanted to add a second bathroom to his 100-year-old bungalow in Montrose. He had a walk-in closet that allowed room for a small shower, vanity and toilet. Here's what we did: installed all new plumbing, HVAC, and electrical. We built them a custom shower pan, installed subway tile to the ceiling and a marble hexagonal shower floor. We opened an existing window, hidden behind sheetrock, painted and floated the walls, installed new lighting and fixtures. After we leveled the floor, we installed ceramic wood tile, a new vanity and a toilet. Voila, a new second bathroom!
